Man City launch new Night Rising 3rd kit
Want to see the new Man City 3rd kit? You might need some sun glasses!
The new Man City 3rd kit has been launched and it’s a bright one!
Made by Nike the new kit, called “Night Rising”, is a neon green and black kit and City got new signing Kevin De Bruyne to model it in their first promotional shots.
The new kit is to be worn in Champions League and domestic cup away games and is to feature against Sunderland in the Capital One cup game on the 22nd Sept.
The kit is released on the 1st October and can be pre-ordered from the official Man City store (Seasoncard holders and Cityzen’s get 10% off)
Where does the green come from?
City haven’t got a history of wearing green as an outfield shirt, however Nike state that the colour comes from the green trim of the iconic Wembley 99 shirt.
In their press release Nike go as far to say:
“As Manchester City grows in global stature and vies for major titles, the club’s heritage remains integral to its identity. This season the club will play some of its biggest away matches in a kit inspired by a truly momentous play-off victory that secured promotion from the third tier of English football.
Faced with a 2-0 deficit against Gillingham FC at Wembley, Manchester City scored two goals in injury time and ultimately triumphed 3-1 in the ensuing penalty shootout.
Paying homage to this pivotal match in the club’s history, the green trim from the club’s yellow and black 1999 shirt provides the bold color palate for this new Night Rising third kit.”
As a fan who was at Wembley 99 (and still have the original shirt) I dug mine out of storage to take a look.
Now I’m not a particularly arty person but in my eyes the trim was blue. Maybe they mean if you merge the yellow and blue you get the new green!
Have I seen the new kit somewhere else?
If you read my piece “Does this Nike Video reveal the Man City 3rd kit” last week, you’ll have seen that the new Man City 3rd kit is the identical design as the new Corinthias of Brazil 3rd kit in a different colour.
It does seem that Nike have created a standard template for their 3rd kits with the colour being picked as a nod to the clubs tradition. City’s is their Wembley 99 campaign whereas Corinthias is based on the colour of the soil they originally played on!
Nike’s 3rd kits for Barcelona, Inter and PSG are all the same (although PSG’s all black kit hides the sleeve detail).
The shirt has been christened the “Night Rising” shirt, an obvious play on Blue Moon Rising.
Whilst the shirt is a 3rd kit, Nike class this as the Champions League and Cup away shirt. As most of these games are played at night the shirt has been designed to be played under floodlights, hence Night Rising!
“A black ombré graphic accentuates the green shirt and shorts, blending from the cuffs of the short and shirt. During night games, this effect serves to accentuate the players’ physical presence underneath the floodlights. Black socks, with dark grey chevrons on the calf, further this powerful framing of body.” (Nike Press release)
Hopefully we’ll glare the opposition out and get some better Champions League results!
