The Rules

Before the Southampton game last season I roped in my long suffering friends Alex and Andy to embarked on a Chip Shop survey of Chippies around the Etihad. We bought a portion of chips (no salt or vinegar) and a pot of gravy from 4 chippies to see who did the best. Last game at Maine Road: Long suffering friends Alex and Andy with the GingerWig

The results

4th place – The Golden Fish, Beswick Street (Near the Holt Town Metrolink stop)The Golden Fish chippy

The first stop on our journey from Piccadilly. The Golden Fish is part of a row of shops on Beswick Street. Chips: Quite lightly cooked, the chips had a floury texture making them quite dry. Really needed the gravy to eat them all. Gravy: A traditional gravy rather than the type you can get in Chinese chippies. No problems with the gravy except a couple of lumps but it was a necessity for the chips.

3rd place – Tony’s Stadium Chippy, Grey Mare Lane (part of the Mary D’s building)

058 The 3rd place surprised me as I park on Grey Mare Lane and walking past this chippy is always full. It’s popularity might be the closeness of the chippy to the 3 pubs on Grey Mare Lane or the fact that there is a wall opposite which is popular to sit on whilst eating. Proudly displaying North West chippy of the year sign it only got 3rd place in our survey (although there was not much difference between 3rd and 2nd). The chippy is well staffed and the service is quick, although the queues don’t always make it feel so. Chips: Nicely cooked but the texture of the potato in the chips was a bit smooth as if they were mash potato reformed into chip shape. Gravy: A satisfactory standard gravy. 001.003

The boys took advantage of the wall seating opposite Tony’s Stadium chippy

2nd place – The English Chippy, Midlothian Street (behind the Velodrome)

003 Tucked down a side-street behind the Velodrome is the very traditional The English Chippy. A throw back to Maine Road with a chippy surrounded by red brick terraces. Chips: Good chips eaten on a wall in the grounds of the Velodrome – probably the nicest place we ate our chips. Gravy: This is probably what pushed Tony’s stadium chippy into 3rd place. The English Chippy’s gravy was really thick (you could stand a chip up in it!). Whilst it wasn’t the best gravy we had that day, it was the thickest and clung to the chips.

THE WINNER: 1st Place

Maine Road Chippy, behind the South Stand

The The Maine Road chippy is the nearest to the ground being literally across the road from the new south stand. Quite a small building it seems to be an end of terrace without the rest of the terrace. Two things could have let this chippy down

1) The building is a hair dressers upstairs, so the signage on the building is a bit weird

2) We asked for a pot of gravy. After searching through a few cupboards the server revealed they had no pots and offered a disposable coffee cup as an alternative.

It’s not coffee, it’s gravy!

Chips: Without doubt the best chips of the day. Really like homemade with the odd one with a green end that you can’t eat. Well cooked with golden outsides and soft yet real potato insides. Gravy: Rich, tasty gravy almost like oxtail soup. Despite being poured out of a coffee cup, it was the best tasting gravy of the day. I could have drunk it on it’s own. So there you have it Maine Road chippy, for us, did the best chips and gravy and got our 1st place. Do you agree? Where do you get your chips at the game? Did we miss a good chippy?
